Alta Group is developing next-generation catalysts and battery chemicals designed to reduce both the cost and carbon footprint of lithium-ion manufacturing.
Where many battery innovations focus on cell architecture, novel chemistry, or manufacturing processes, Alta works upstream — at the molecular and process levels — targeting solvents and electrolyte components that shape gigafactory economics and regulatory exposure. By redesigning chemical pathways, Alta enables performance and sustainability improvements without forcing manufacturers to rebuild existing production lines.
Above all, Alta Group, a Netherlands-based company, enables the building of a European battery supply chain, strengthening European autonomy and security.

At the core of Alta’s technology is a proprietary catalyst platform enabling the efficient production of key battery chemicals using CO₂ as a feedstock. The core of Alta’s technology enables the production of propylene carbonate and ethylene carbonate, widely used in various applications. An innovative process and proprietary catalyst enable the reduction of energy use and costs, enabling head-on competition with Chinese substitutes.
One example is MeOx, a drop-in alternative to N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), the widely used cathode solvent in lithium-ion manufacturing. NMP carries a significant embedded carbon footprint (approximately +5 tCO₂ per tonne) and requires extensive ventilation, solvent recovery, and compliance infrastructure in Europe.
Crucially, MeOx is designed to operate on existing cathode coating lines — preserving hundreds of millions of euros of installed manufacturing infrastructure while simplifying regulatory and operational burden.
Alta’s process enables the production of solvents and electrolyte components with an estimated carbon footprint of approximately –0.85 tCO₂ per tonne, structurally reducing Scope 3 emissions at the battery level.
From Catalyst to Construction
Alta’s innovation extends beyond laboratory chemistry. The company has secured land, permits, and grid access, and has prepared detailed engineering documentation for its demonstration plant, which produces propylene carbonate and MeOx using its proprietary catalyst platform.
This level of execution readiness positions Alta among the few FOAK chemical projects that can credibly claim shovel-readiness before large-scale capital deployment.
The demo facility is designed to validate industrial-scale production economics while supplying early customers in the battery value chain.
With Alta Group’s team experience in completing 70+ chemical EPC projects, commissioning for the Demo Project is planned in a year from financial close.
The first five clients have already signed LOIs for the Demo Project output.
Why Industry and Investors Are Watching
Battery manufacturers in Europe face higher structural energy costs, tightening carbon regulations, and increased scrutiny of Scope 3 emissions under CBAM and related frameworks. Additional pressures on manufacturing and the battery supply chain, due to the reshoring force, are forcing gigafactories to seek local alternatives.
Alta’s catalyst addresses these pressures directly by:
- Lowering the embedded carbon intensity of electrolyte and solvent inputs
- Reducing capital and operating burden linked to toxic solvent handling
- Strengthening European supply-chain resilience
- Preserving compatibility with existing manufacturing lines
In an industry where scale-up risk often outweighs technical novelty, Alta’s approach combines molecular innovation with industrial pragmatism.
Current Raise and Next Steps
Alta Group is currently raising €8 million in equity and €10 million in debt. The capital raised will support equipment procurement, construction of the Demo Project, and commercial validation with battery and chemical industry partners.
